Freedom, equality and fraternity.
The French Revolution that up-ended the country and the whole epoque has left for an artist numerous questions unanswered.
What is a revolution? Romance or insanity, vengeance or violence, triumph of heroes or ferocity of slaughtermen?
The new collection by Natalia Naftalieva mixes in the cacophony of styles and sound the manifestoes of barricades and French chanson,
pathetic of revolutionary masses and cheap splendor of street hustlers, les clochards and forerunners of Jacobin terror.
Yesterdays gutter flown by rush of history to the surface of society determinate new principles and styles. Grey and red are two main
colors in this collection where red – the color of blood and aggression will engulf the ascetical grey. Such is logic of every revolution,
its bloody underside that is perceived by an artist as it is. Red boutonnieres on modest petit dresses are the fire blasts on the grey streets of Paris.
In the beginning they are just drops of blood on lapels and collars. Then they will spread further and dominate the rest of colors – first in the
bright backing of Jacobin costumes and later in the red apron of slughterman. White wedding gowns with torn laces a-la Marie Antoinette are symbolic of dethroned monarchy and kingship.
Red scarf is a stamp on the neck of dishonored aristocracy, a tragic bloody trail left by The Great French Revolution. |
